In 2003 and 2004, a study was conducted examining the urban forest in Weequahic Park, located in Newark NJ. A tree inventory was performed with information gathered about each individual tree (such as species, height, diameter of trunk, health factors, and environmental conditions) within a prescribed area of the park. The data was collected and entered into a GIS database. With this information, urban park managers would better understand the evolving natural systems at work in the park. In addition, it would provide information on how to better maintain plant systems and further aid in the continuing interactive role with the public patrons of Weequahic Park.
